The nfl is stupid

I have to say that the kneeling thing served it’s purpose; it brought attention to the plight of African Americans, and generated discussion on broad topics related to race.  That’s essentially what Kapernick wanted to do.

But it had run its course, and IMHO continuing to kneel only serves to worsen the relations that it originally intended to call out.  In short, it is time for something new and different.

But the nfl is being stupid on this topic.  Goodell’s words came off as an old white guy telling black youth what to do, and his threat to fine them if they didn’t comply is silly.  And then adding that they had a vote among owners, and that it was unanimous made it sound even worse - you mean all 31 rich white old guys, and the one who is not, agreed with you?

Then of course we find out that there was no vote.  Because of course there wasn’t.  That just makes Goodell come off as an even bigger douche.  Several owners came out and said they didn’t agree, and others said they would pay the fines for players.  Hardly unanimity.

I sincerely hope players find new ways to fight injustice, whatever that may be. And that some of them take on this rule.

And while we’re at it, kapernick is better quarterback, by all quantitative measures, than probably half of the league.  Why isn’t he playing?  Teams will take chance after chance on players, even ones that have actually committed crimes.  But standing up for social issues is too much.  That’s just nonsense. No question in my mind: he’s been blackballed.

So, here’s what I plan to do, and my proposal to you: don’t boycott the nfl.  I say watch their games, but don’t buy their merchandise, or tickets to games.  Consume it, essentially, for free.  And where you feel it’s approproraite, tell their advertisers what you think and/or why you choose not to buy their products. Record games, and watch them after they end, fast forwarding through commercials. Watch red zone that doesn’t have commercials. Find ways to make money on the nfls brand for yourself.  Gamble on it, if that’s your thing.  But don’t give the nfl money directly.
