This is a broad overview of wireless electricity, its development, and some practical real-world applications. 

The article also notes that Nikola Tesla proposed this idea in the early 1900s and had been toying with it a bit. But the technology wasn't quite there, and the transmission of power was a huge business, so companies didn't want this. 

Sadly, it was mostly shelved. But he was definitely on to something.
